Dr Ashleigh Barron

Ashleigh graduated with a BSc (Hons) in Physics from Heriot-Watt University in 2009, and an MSc degree in Photonics & Optoelectronic Devices from Heriot-Watt and St Andrews Universities in 2010. She is currently studying towards a PhD on using lensed multicore fibres for optical trapping applications. She has successfully demonstrated interferometric optical trapping of both polystyrene microspheres and Escherichia coli bacterial cells using a four core MCF lensed with a conventional fusion splicer. She is currently working towards creating a fully integrated “turn-key” device suitable for use in non-optics based laboratories. Her work has been featured twice as “image of the week” for Optics InfoBase.
